Neurons are the structural and functional units of the nervous tissue.A neuron consists of a cell body and processes.The processes or neurites are of two kinds-one or more dendrites and a single axon. Cell body:Cell bodies of most neurons are situated in the gray matter of the brain and spinal cord.The cell body presents the following features : 1)Cell membrane-It is trilaminar,consisting of outer inner protein and intermediate lipid layer. 2)Neucleus:The neucleus is central in position,large,vesicular and contains a prominent necleolus. 3)Cytoplasm: It contains the following: a.Centrosome with centrioles b.Neurofibrils c.Microtubules d.Nissl Bodies e.Mitochondria. f.Golgi apparatus g.Lysosome h.Pigments. Processes of neurons: a.Dendrites:These are the cytoplasmic extensions of the cell bodies,one or more in number and contains neurofibrils,nissl bodies and mitochondria. b.Axon:Each neuron presents a single axon which arises from the axon hillokck of the cell body where nissl bodies are absent.The axon divides into smaller branches known as telodendria. Structurally axon is formed from within outwards: Axoplasm &Axolemma;.
