Structure of chromosome

The shape and structure of chromosome is given below: Shape: Chromosome is normally long and thread-like. Structure: i. Every chromosome has two thread-like parts. Every thread-like part is called chromonema. ii. During cell division they divide into two parts. Each of them is called chromatid. Every chromatid is made of a chromonema. iii. In metaphase stage of mitosis each chromosome has a round and constricted site that is called centromere or kinetocore. iv. Both sides of a centromere of a chromosome is called arm. v. It was thought before that chromosome is covered with a matrix. But in fact it is a collection of protein and inorganic substances which is not seen on electron microscope.
