Robots are now being employed to arm and disarm explosives, which used to be a risky process for humans. Day after day, nuclear power plants create a large amount of radioactive waste. The wastes emit radioactive radiation, which is lethal to people. As a result, robots are already being employed to clean nuclear weapons. Firefighting robots are currently on the job.

Automatons were famous in ancient and medieval periods, according to several accounts. The ancient Greeks and Romans constructed simple robots for use as tools, toys, and religious rituals. The Greek God Hephaestus was said to have built automatons to labor for him in a workshop, predating contemporary industrial robots. Regrettably, none of the early automatons have survived.
Automatons were prominent in the ‘Middle Ages in Europe and the Middle East as elements of clocks and religious rituals. Al-Jazari (1136-1206), an Arab polymath, left writings detailing and depicting his numerous mechanical creations, including a vast elephant clock that moved and sounded at the hour, a musical robot band, and a drink-serving waitress automaton. There is a living mechanical monk in Europe that kisses the cross with his hands. Many more automata were constructed that depicted moving animals and humanoid figures that functioned on rudimentary cam systems, but automata were widely understood, and technology was advanced enough in the 18th century. The first successful biomechanical automaton, a human figure that plays the flute, was created by French engineer Jacques de vaucanson.
