Ecology- Definition, Examples, Importance and Types

Published on 13-Aug-2025

Ecology

It is basically the study of relationships between organisms and the environment surrounding them. It also considers the equilibrium between these relationships.

There are different types of ecology:

  • Population ecology

  • Community ecology

  • Global ecology

  • Landscape ecology

  • Ecosystem ecology

  • And others

Factors in Ecology

There are two types of factors in ecology: biotic and abiotic.

  • Biotic factors: Living factors of an ecosystem.

  • Abiotic factors: Non-living components of the ecosystem.

The living and non-living elements, as well as their interactions with the environment, are included in the biotic and abiotic variables.

Types of Ecology

Global Ecology:

  • Focuses on interactions among Earth’s land, ecosystems, atmosphere, and oceans.

  • Helps to understand their influence on the planet.

Landscape Ecology:

  • Studies the role of human impacts on landscape features.

  • Deals with materials exchange and energy exchange in the ecosystem.

Ecosystem Ecology:

  • Includes the factors of the entire ecosystem, both living and non-living, and their relationship with the environment.

Community Ecology:

  • Deals with how the community is affected by interactions between living organisms.

Population Ecology:

  • Examines how the genetic composition and size of populations are altered.

  • Studies population density and distribution.

Importance of Ecology

  • It is important for the conservation of the environment.

  • It helps in energy conservation.

  • It plays a role in resource allocation.
